The gym was quiet as Motoko walked in. She chided him about holding on to old habits. He retaliated as he turned to face her, reminding her of her watch. And that was when all hell broke loose. He saw the hurt and pain and was set to kill some poor hapless bastard. He thundered about who ever it was was about to be real sorry. She placed her hands gently on his chest and told him to settle down. She reached in her pocket and retrieved the letter. She told him what was in the letter was just between the two of them and no one else.
In the years they had known each other, they had grown close. They respected the job and the fact that Motoko was Batou’s boss. It was a hard pill to swallow some times for him, as she was prone to taking great risks. He stood by her and looked over her as best he could.
But now, at this moment in time, he was at a loss as to what to do.
He took the letter and felt as if he was about to be executed. He sat down on his work out bench and she sat down close to his side. As he read the letter he began to understand why she was in such pain. He felt her rest her head on his shoulder and he put his massive arm around her waist. She looked so tiny and frail next to this giant of a man. Batou could not contain himself as he tried to hold back the sobs. He thought of his own childhood and how he had at least gotten to have his. He finally understood, in his own way, what it was that was eating away at her all this time. He silently offered up a prayer of thanks to her “uncle” who had saved her life. Had he not saved her, they would have never met. Batou couldn’t imagine what his life would have been like had he not had Motoko come in to it.
He quickly realized that thought was being selfish. Her coming in to his life, as joyful as it was, was at the expense of the one he love’s joy and peace of mind. He thought the best thing would be for them to attend the funeral and let her get the closure she needed. If she wanted him to come along.
